Antonín LímanIn the fall of 2014 I received an unexpected email letter from the Japanese Manyo Institute in Nara that took my breath away. They offered me the prestigious Nara Manyo World Prize, under two conditions: first, that I’ll appear in person at the acceptance ceremony and second, that I’ll give a speech in Japanese. These conditions were fairly easy to fulfill, though I was a bit worried about the long and exhausting trip. Thanks to to the generous help of my son Tony and JAL I made it without any problems, arriving in Nara on March 19 in the evening. The elegant and dignified ceremony, hosted gracefully by Professor Nakanishi, took place on March 21.
It was attended by officials from the Nara Prefectural government and some of my Japanese and Czech friends: Professor Mori Michiko and Tamaki Akemi from Otemae University, Professor Odagiri Hiroko from Fukui University and Professor Karel Fiala also from Fukui University, who did so much for this prize. The graphic designer of several of my books, Ms. Daniela Renčová, even came all the way from Prague. A few days later came Jura Matela, a younger Czech colleague from Brno, who took me to a wonderful mountain onsen called Yunomine. It’s a miraculous place deep in the mountains of Kii Peninsula, one of the oldest spas in Japan. The three weeks in Japan went by like a dream, I visited all the great sites in Nara related to the Man’yoshu: Mt. Miwa, the Three Sacred Mountains of Yamato, the remains of the old palace at Fujiwara-kyo and other places related to Japanese classics or their historical personalities (Kashiwara Jingu, Asukadera etc.) Again I realized that Japan is one of the last fully functioning human communities in the world. When I was leaving and saying sayonara to my Japanese friends, I added: “And if I happen to be reborn one of these days, let it be in Japan!”
